How to Convert HTML to Clean Text for AI Prompts
Remove navigation, scripts, forms, styles, and repeated page furniture while preserving the content an AI model needs.
Start with the right source
Before cleaning a web page, decide whether you need the published article, the visible page at a particular moment, or the underlying HTML. Page source is useful when meaningful content arrives in the original response. A page rendered mostly by JavaScript may contain little readable material in its source, even though the browser displays a complete interface. In that case, use a reader view, an authorized export, or copy the relevant visible section.
Respect access restrictions, copyright, privacy, and your organization’s rules. Extract only material you are permitted to use. Remove personal information, authentication values, private URLs, and hidden form data before placing any result into an external AI service.
Remove page furniture
Raw HTML often includes site navigation, consent banners, account controls, footers, advertising containers, scripts, styles, tracking markup, and repeated related-content modules. These elements increase prompt size and can distract the model from the primary material. A useful extraction process prioritizes the main article or documentation region and discards elements that do not contribute to the task.
Removal should be selective. A navigation list may be irrelevant when summarizing an article but valuable when auditing information architecture. A form may be clutter for research yet central to an accessibility review. Set the extraction goal before choosing what to remove.
Preserve meaning and structure
Headings show hierarchy. Lists show grouping and order. Tables express relationships between rows and columns. Links identify sources or destinations. Preserve these features when they affect interpretation. Flattening everything into one paragraph may reduce characters, but it can make a model misunderstand which heading governs a section or which value belongs to a table label.
Image alternative text can carry essential meaning when the image itself is not included. Keep concise alternative text that describes relevant information, while ignoring decorative images with empty alternatives.
Choose Markdown, text, or clean HTML
Markdown is usually a practical choice for AI prompts because it preserves headings, lists, links, emphasis, and simple tables with relatively little syntax. Plain text is suitable when structure is unimportant or the destination cannot handle markup. Clean HTML is helpful when you need semantic elements for a later transformation, but it requires careful handling because arbitrary pasted markup should never be trusted as application code.
Choose one format and inspect a representative sample. The smallest representation is not always the best. A few Markdown characters that preserve section boundaries can prevent ambiguity and produce a more accurate response.
Handle dynamic pages and tables
If source extraction returns an empty shell, the content may be loaded after the page opens. Copy the visible article, use the publisher’s print or export feature, or obtain data through an authorized API. Do not attempt to bypass sign-in, payment, or access controls. For long pages, extract one logical section at a time and label each section with its original heading.
Review complex tables manually. Colspan, rowspan, nested headers, icons, and visual grouping can be lost during conversion. Convert the table into explicit records or short statements when a Markdown grid cannot preserve the relationships. Include units and column meanings.
Review before using the result
Compare the cleaned result with the page. Check the title, author or source when relevant, heading order, lists, links, table labels, code blocks, dates, units, and qualifications. Make sure unrelated recommendations and footer text are gone. Search the result for secrets and personal data. If accuracy matters, retain the source URL and retrieval date in your own notes so you can revisit the original.
Finally, measure the cleaned prompt and test it on the intended task. A good extraction is shorter, readable without the original layout, and complete enough that a reviewer can understand why the AI produced its answer.
Extract readable content as Markdown, plain text, or simplified HTML without fetching the page.
